MCG weekly update April 22-29

Dear Friends of Mullum Gardens,
Here’s your weekly update of “Whats On” at the MCG this week…

Here’s an inspirational short (3 min) video about inner city food growing…
“Gardens build community. Period.” (
says Ron Finley who plants beautiful food producing gardens in South Central Los Angeles.
He describes moments of connection with random neighbours who stop to smell the roses, pick the tomatoes and even contribute plants.
The footage speaks for itself, showing how this simple shift in thinking about the space results in a profound transformation. It brings dignity, beauty,
peace and REAL FOOD where there is none.
“They call areas like this throughout the US “food deserts”.
I thought, why not have food forests?”
Amen Ron Finley! Keep it growing!

WANDERING DEW, Commelina cyanea is on the rampage at the gardens. It is a native plant and serves a purpose in the right place but in the vegie patch it can be a nightmare. Please pull it out around your plots and anywhere else you come across it in the gardens and dispose of it properly. Pippy has set up piles covered in black plastic so ask her if your not sure where to put it. Here’s a photo to help identify it…
